Etymology
The name Thathri is derived from the local Kashmiri word "thath", meaning heaps of timber. Historically, the region was a major center for timber collection from surrounding forests. Historically, laborers stack wood into large piles (thath) before transporting it to Jammu and other markets. This forestry-based economy shaped the early identity of Thathri, and the name has been in use since at least the 20th century.
History
Thathri’s history dates back to pre-medieval times when it was a small agricultural settlement. The area saw significant migration in the 17th and 18th centuries from Kashmir Valley regions such as Tral, Baramulla, and Anantnag. Many families fled feudal oppression during dogra rule and 1990s militancy and settled in the fertile lands of Chenab Valley, contributing to Thathri’s cultural and demographic diversity.
Until 1981, Thathri was part of Bhadarwah Tehsil. It was carved out as a separate tehsil in 1981 and declared a notified area in 2010. On 23 July 2014, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir elevated Thathri to subdivision status, comprising five tehsils:
- Thathri
- Phagsoo
- Kahara
- Chiralla
- Bhela
The subdivision spans 93 villages and covers an area of approximately 124 square kilometers.
