In the narrow lanes of Thathri, where tradition and modernity dance a delicate waltz, a young man named Anzer Ayoob emerged as a beacon of hope and innovation. Born on March 27, 1999, in our very own town in the Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, Anzer’s journey is as inspiring as it is extraordinary—a story that resonates deeply with every soul in our region.

From his earliest days, Anzer exhibited a curious spirit and a profound love for his heritage. Growing up amidst the scenic yet challenging landscapes of the Chenab Valley, he witnessed firsthand the vibrant tapestry of local languages and traditions that many feared would fade away with time. His heart, however, beat with the determination to preserve this cultural wealth. It wasn’t long before he recognized that the power of storytelling—journalism, in its purest form—could serve as a bridge between the past and the future.

At the tender age of 16, while many of his peers were still contemplating their dreams, Anzer embarked on a path less trodden. He began exploring journalism, not merely as a career but as a calling. Life, as it often does, presented him with hardships. When familial responsibilities compelled him to drop out of college to care for his ailing mother, many might have seen an end to his ambitions. Instead, this challenge fueled his resolve. With courage and determination, he turned adversity into opportunity, channeling his energies into a mission that would forever alter the media landscape of our region.
In 2017, with the spark of hope and the conviction to empower local voices, Anzer founded The Chenab Times. What began as a modest digital news portal soon evolved into a robust platform dedicated to unearthing the stories of marginalized communities in the Chenab Valley. With an unwavering commitment to journalism in local tongues—Bhaderwahi, Sarazi, and Urdu—The Chenab Times became a sanctuary for the forgotten narratives of our people. Here, every article, every video, and every report resonated with the pulse of the valley, capturing the struggles and triumphs of ordinary lives.
But Anzer’s ambitions were not confined to merely reporting the news. He envisioned a world where journalism could be a catalyst for social change. This vision materialized in the form of the Chenab Times Foundation—a charitable trust aimed at promoting art, culture, and public discourse. As its President, Anzer has championed initiatives that not only preserve our local languages and traditions but also advocate for educational and social reforms. His work has bridged the gap between the local and the global, ensuring that the unique identity of our valley is not lost amidst the rapid currents of modernity.
In addition to his daily journalistic endeavors, Anzer is also an accomplished author. His 2023 book, The Power of Local Journalism: A Voice for the Voiceless in Rural Areas, stands as a testament to his belief that grassroots reporting can ignite transformation. His other works—Inspiring Muslim Influencers: Stories of Making a Positive Impact, Journalism and the Use of Social Media, and How to Say No, When You Want To Say It—are guides that inspire many young minds to embrace the power of storytelling and critical thought. Each book is a chapter in his ongoing narrative of empowering communities, serving as both a practical handbook and a source of inspiration for aspiring journalists and activists alike.

Yet, what truly makes Anzer Ayoob remarkable is his ability to weave the fabric of his local identity into every facet of his work. As an independent writer from Thathri, I have watched him grow from a curious child in our narrow alleys to a visionary leader on the digital frontlines. His passion for regional journalism has not only spotlighted the hidden gems of the Chenab Valley but has also garnered recognition beyond our borders. Contributions to esteemed platforms like The Diplomat, Mongabay, and The Wire (India) further testify to his dedication and expertise.
Anzer’s journey is not without its challenges and critics. Some have questioned whether a strong regional focus might limit the broader appeal of his work. Yet, for those of us who call Thathri home, his commitment to preserving our languages and traditions is a victory in itself—a reminder that the soul of our community is enriched when every voice is heard.
Today, as we witness the growth of The Chenab Times and the expanding influence of the Chenab Times Foundation, Anzer Ayoob stands as a symbol of resilience, innovation, and hope. His story is an ode to the power of local journalism—a story that continues to unfold with every challenge met, every barrier broken, and every life touched in our beloved valley.
In the heart of Thathri, under the vast expanse of the Himalayan sky, Anzer’s journey is a living narrative of transformation—a narrative that reminds us all that even the smallest voice, when filled with conviction, can echo across the world.
